        7 Myths About Composite Decking

Composite decking is all the rage. The poster product for low-maintenance gardens and the go-to for creating modern, attractive outdoor spaces.

But is it really as good as people say it is?

If you’re being put off by conflicting information, leaving you questioning if composite decking is worth all the hype or if you’d be better off sticking with traditional timber – you need to read this!

Here experts at Modern Garden spill the truth on some of the most common misconceptions – good and bad – about composite decking. Helping you to make a fully informed choice and separate the fact from the fiction once and for all…

        Myth #1 – it’s maintenance free

Let’s set things completely straight here, compared to wooden decking, composite IS virtually maintenance free. But not completely (is anything?!).

To get the very best from your decking, you will need to do a tiny bit of work.

There’s no painting involved, or any need to apply endless protective treatments as with wooden decking, but one thing composite decking can’t do is clean itself.

So, to keep boards looking their very best, an occasional brush to remove surface debris and a wipe-over with soapy water, is recommended every now and again.

But that’s it, we promise. See, it was barely worth mentioning, was it?

Myth #2 – it looks cheap

If you believe this, you’ve been looking at the wrong composite decking.

Modern, high-quality decking is produced to mimic the appearance of wood and will require someone to get up close and personal to establish if it really is or not. And even that may leave some people still guessing.

The finish of composite is high-end quality. So, whether you build a deck that favours a traditional appearance or go ultra-modern, it’s guaranteed to look great.

        Myth #3 – it’s expensive

The initial outlay for composite decking may be more than timber but it’s important to look at the bigger picture.

Thanks to the durability of composite, it can easily outlast wooden decking.

Pair this longevity with reduced maintenance costs – no annual outlay for paint or treatments etc. – and the fact that composite decking can help to add value to your home, and the cost-effectiveness soon becomes apparent.

        Myth #4 – it’s hard to fit

        This one is definitely nonsense!

The lightweight quality of composite decking makes it easy to handle and manoeuvre into position. Meaning that with a bit of planning – and armed with an installation guide – anyone can have a go at fitting.

Myth #5 – all composite boards are environmentally friendly

        Not true.

At Modern Garden, we ensure our boards are made from recycled wood fibres and polyethene, reducing the amount of waste going to landfill.

The same can’t be said of all manufacturers, so if you’re keen to make eco-friendly choices, it’s important to do your research.

Myth #6 – you can’t paint composite decking

One of the big plusses of composite boards is that they come pre-coloured and don’t need painting – ever!

Whilst this is a big draw for many, others prefer the freedom of knowing they can change the look whenever the mood takes them.

Good to know then, that you CAN paint composite decking – it’s just great to know you don’t need to!

        Myth #7 – there’s no choice

Ok, so you can paint wood any colour under the sun but – aside from the fact we’ve just established you can also paint composite decking – this modern alternative actually offers you way more choice than you may be expecting. Even more than wooden decking!

How so? Because many composite decks come with a choice of finishes. On one side an authentic wood grain finish and on the reverse a more contemporary lined effect.

        One board, 2 different looks.

And let’s not forget that there are a number of colourways to pick from, including natural-looking browns, numerous shades of grey and striking blacks. There are even multiple lengths which can be used to get more creative with your design (and help minimise waste).

If that’s not great choice, then we don’t know what is!
